A new study published Friday finds that a blood thinner, Norvasc, reduces the risk of heart attack in the elderly by 50%.
Researchers found that Norvasc had a 50 percent reduction in heart attack in the elderly in men and women ages 65 years and older. The study, by the University of California researchers, was published in the May 23 issue ofThe Lancet.
"There's no one better than either the elderly or the younger generation," said lead author Andrea L. M. Caruso, MD, professor of clinical pharmacology and epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco. "But if you're a man or a woman, it's possible to prevent heart attacks and stroke by lowering the dose of Norvasc."
Mild to moderate hypertension can increase the risk of heart attacks and stroke, which is the most serious form of cardiovascular disease. Norvasc is one of the most widely used statins.
The study, which was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine, included a total of 10,725 patients between the ages of 1 and 90 years. The researchers used the FDA's annual prescription drug benefit analysis to evaluate the drug's impact on blood pressure. The analysis found that Norvasc reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 53 percent and 51 percent, respectively, compared to the placebo group.
The researchers said they believe the findings may be due to Norvasc's ability to block the effects of angiotensin II, which is a blood hormone that dilates blood vessels.
The study, which involved nearly 30,000 participants in the United States, included 564 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a health survey conducted in 1998.
The researchers found that the Norvasc group had a significantly greater reduction in blood pressure compared to the placebo group (50 percent reduction in heart attack risk versus 26 percent reduction in stroke risk). The researchers also found that the Norvasc group had a slightly lower rate of heart attack in women (40 percent reduction in the heart attack risk versus 13 percent reduction in stroke risk) and a slightly lower rate of death compared to the placebo group (34 percent reduction in heart attack versus 8 percent reduction in stroke risk).
The study also found that the Norvasc group had a similar number of deaths as the placebo group. The researchers also found that the Norvasc group had a significantly lower rate of chest pain compared to the placebo group (26 percent reduction in heart attack risk versus 13 percent reduction in stroke risk).
In addition, they concluded that the Norvasc drug had no effect on heart attacks in men and women, but had an effect on the heart attacks in women and heart disease, which was associated with increased heart attacks.
"This suggests that the increased risk of cardiovascular events associated with lower doses of Norvasc may not be due to a dose-response relationship," said Caruso. "Norvasc can have a beneficial effect on protecting against cardiovascular disease, but it's important that physicians do their best to be aware of these potential risks."
In addition to the study, Caruso also said that there is a lack of information on how long the Norvasc blood thinner may have been effective.
"This study provides the first clear evidence that the Norvasc blood thinner is still effective," he said. "A study like this is needed to confirm these findings and determine if it is a good alternative for patients in clinical practice."
For more information about the study, contact:
Tina L. Parnes, MD, MPH, professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, San Francisco, said the study's results suggest that Norvasc may not be the best drug for treating hypertension in the elderly.
Dr. Parnes said she was skeptical about the drug's safety but had heard about the study's results and was interested in further research. "I have a long history of cardiovascular disease and I think the results are encouraging," she said.
Parnes said her research was funded by a Pfizer research grant from the NIH.
When contacted byabout the study, Caruso declined to comment.
